Journos on hunger strike protesting Mahmudur’s arrest

Journalists will observe a hunger strike on Monday, protesting the arrest of Amar Desh Acting Editor Mahmudur Rahman.

Ruhul Amin Gazi, president of one faction of the Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists(BFUJ) announced the programme at a meeting jointly organised by BFUJ and the Dhaka Union of Journalists(DUJ) in front of the National Press Club on Saturday afternoon.

“We will observe a token hunger strike from 10am to 2pm, protesting the arrest of Mahmudur Rahman and the conspiracy to stop publication of Daily Amar Desh," Gazi said.

Earlier on Friday, they announced a nonstop sit-in at the National Press Club premises, also on Monday, demanding the release of Mahmudur Rahman.

BFUJ General Secretary Shawkat Mahmud and DUJ President Abdus Shaheed, addressed the programme, among others.

Police arrested Mahmudur Rahman from his Karwan Bazar office on a charge of sedition, Thursday morning. He was taken on a 13-day remand in three cases.

On Thursday night, police raided the daily's printing press and sealed it off.
