The nomination board of the ruling Awami League is set to meet on Saturday for selecting its candidates for the fifth phase of the municipality polls.
The announcement of the selected names is expected after a meeting of Bangladesh Awami League’s Local Government Representative Nomination Board, to be held at Ganabhaban with the party chief and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.
The fifth phase of the polls, to take place in 31 municipalities, are scheduled to be held on February 28, as announced by the Election Commission (EC).
February 2 is the deadline for submission of nomination papers.
According to the schedule, the date for scrutiny of nomination papers is February 4, while the last date for the withdrawal of candidature is February 11.
The municipalities that are scheduled to go to polls in this phase are Haragach in Rangpur, Charghat and Durgapur in Rajshahi, Nachole in Chapainawabganj, Joypurhat, Bogra, Kaliganj and Maheshpur in Jhenaidah, Jessore and Keshabpur in Jessore, Bhola and Char Fasson in Bhola, Madaripur and Shibchar in Madaripur, Nandail in Mymensingh, and Dewanganj, Jamalpur, Islampur and Madarganj in Jamalpur.
The rest are Singair in Manikganj, Kaliganj in Gazipur, Bhairab in Kishoreganj, Habiganj, Brahmanbaria, Matlab and Shahrasti in Chandpur, Raipur in Lakshmipur, and Mirsarai, Baraiyarhat, Raozan and Rangunia in Chittagong.
In the first phase, election to 24 municipalities was held on December 28, and the second phase polls to 60 municipalities took place on January 16.
The third phase of the polls, to 64 municipalities, will be held on Saturday, and the fourth phase of the elections, to 56 municipalities, is scheduled to take place on February 14.
