Hafiz and Shawkat were served the notice for allegedly violating party rules

Update : 15 Dec 2020, 10:04 PM

After being served show cause notices by the top brass of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), party Vice-Chairman Maj (retd) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed said he was not sure why he was facing action.

Speaking to Dhaka Tribune on Tuesday evening, the BNP leader said: “I am just surprised at the show cause notice. I don’t really understand what led to this decision [by BNP].

“I will clear my stance in a media briefing on Thursday,” he further said before taking no more questions.

BNP Vice-Chairman Shawkat Mahmud, who also received a show cause notice, refused to make any comments on the matter.

The party leader was served with the notice for allegedly violating party rules by staging a sudden demonstration in Dhaka city’s Gulistan area and “misguiding” party leaders and activists.

In a surprise move on Monday, BNP served the notices. The party’s Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi at a press briefing in Dhaka on Tuesday announced that the two leaders violated party discipline.

“Leaders and activists of a political party cannot breach the party rules. Action for such an act is mentioned in the party constitution,” he added.

Rizvi did not clarify how the two leaders violated party rules.

Shawkat Mahmud, also a journalist leader, was given 72 hours to explain his stance while Hafiz, who served as a minister during the BNP’s last tenure, received five days.

Party insiders said Shawkat prompted some BNP leaders and activists to stage an anti-government demonstration in the city without informing the party high-ups on Monday, after a discussion at the National Press Club in the morning under the banner of Bangladesh Sammilita Peshajibi Parishad.

Hafiz is accused of openly opposing the party’s leadership, according to sources at the party.
