Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, the student wing of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), has announced its committees for four educational institutions including Bangladesh Engineering and Technology University (Buet) amid a ban on student politics.
A media statement by the JCD acting Office Secretary, named Asif Hossen Rochi and Ali Ahmed as the convener and the member secretary of the five-strong ad-hoc committee for the Buet unit..
The newly-announced leaders will form the fully-fledged committee and this process will remain continuous in the future, according to JCD General Secretary Iqbal Hossain Shamol.
However, Buet authorities have announced to take necessary measures against the members of the JCD committee.
In a statement on Saturday, its Students' Welfare Director Prof Mizanur Rahman said that taking part in any political activity is a punishable offence as per the existing rules of the university.
“We have noticed that Chhatra Dal announced a Buet unit committee. Necessary actions will be taken against those involved in such anti-disciplinary activities,” the statement quoted him.
In light of widespread criticism and Buet students’ protests following the murder of Abrar Fahad, Buet authorities imposed a ban on political activities of all organizations inside the university campus on October 11, 2019.
Abrar was a second-year student at Buet’s Electrical and Electronic Engineering Department. He was tortured to death by some Chhatra League men in the early hours of October 7 in one of the dorms of the university.
