A Dhaka University hall unit Chhatra League leader has allegedly been beaten up by Chhatra Dal men inside the university campus.

Imam Hasan, joint secretary of Chhatra League’s Kabi Jasim Uddin Hall unit, was allegedly beaten near the TSC intersection on Wednesday night.

He was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) for treatment following the incident.

Speaking to Dhaka Tribune, Tanbir Hasan Shaikat, outgoing member of the expired Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (Ducsu), claimed that the attack on Imam was carried out by the university’s Chhatra Dal members.

He said: “We were providing food to the poor people at the TSC on Wednesday night. We have been doing this for the past 100 days. Imam [the victim], by using loudspeakers in a rickshaw, was telling people to maintain social distancing. He was also telling those who came for food to leave as soon as they get a packet to avoid unnecessary crowding.”

“As soon as Imam’s rickshaw reached near a vehicle carrying Chhatra Dal members, an altercation took place between them.

“At one point around 20 Chhatra Dal men led by Mahfuzur Rahman, convenor of Master Da Surya Sen Hall unit Chhatra Dal attacked Imam,” Shaikat added.

According to eyewitnesses a boy named Manik, sho sells street food in the area, also got injured during the attack.

When we tried to contact, Mahfuz, the leader of BNP backed student wing was unavailable for comments despite repeated attempts.

Denying the allegations, Rokibul Islam Rakib, convenor of DU unit Chhatra Dal said: “I rushed to the spot after I was informed of the incident. I asked my members to leave the spot with me and so they did.”

“However, there was an argument over the use of loudspeakers for making announcements but no one was attacked,” Rakib claimed.
