The government is ‘deceiving the people’ by providing incorrect information of casualties due to the novel coronavirus, the BNP alleges.
“When the infected cases are growing, the death toll is declining to 2-3-4. The other day Dhaka Medical College director said 31 people died there and some of them were tested positive for corona while the rest were not tested yet. We’ve information that tests are not done...," UNB quotes its Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir saying.
Speaking to the media at the party chief’s Gulshan offices, the senior BNP leader said that no one in the country believes the figures provided by the government on the Covid-19 situation.
"You (govt) are not giving the nation the right information even during such a bad time as you don’t have a sense of responsibility. You’re misleading people and deceiving them by not giving accurate information. What can we call it other than a criminal offence?” he said.
Fakhrul strongly opposed the government’s move to allow reopening shops and shopping palls ‘ignoring’ the people’s lives and security.
“Nothing is more precious than life. You’re reopening shopping malls. Why do we need to go for eid shopping and start economic activities amid the pandemic? What have you done for so long? You used to claim our country has become a middle-income one and our economy is a role model in the world. It seems our economy has not gained the strength to cope with the current situation, but you completely deceived people with rhetoric about it," the BNP leader said.
He said the government has failed to prevent the corona outbreak and tackle the current ‘war-like’ situation caused by the pandemic.
Fakhrul also criticised the government for reopening the RMG factories putting the lives of workers at risk. “It’s an unpardonable offence by the government…people are the owners of this country. They've the fundamental right to live, but the government is violating that right.”
The BNP leader also said though journalists are working risking their lives to provide people information, the government did not announce any stimulus package for them.
