Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal has said BNP Chairperson Khaleda will stay under her younger brother Shamim Eskander’s custody over the period of six months, starting from the time of her release.

He made the statement while speaking to reporters at his secretariat office in Dhaka on Wednesday.

Earlier, family members of Khaleda Zia arrived at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) to receive her upon her release from jail.

Khaleda’s sister Selima Rahman, younger brother Shamim Eskander, and his wife Kaniz Fatema were present at the BSMMU compound to receive her.

Khaleda's personal vehicles along with her personal security members were also seen at the hospital.

Khaleda was kept at Room 623 of the prison cell at the BSMMU.

Meanwhile, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was also seen present at the BSMMU compound.

On Tuesday, the government stayed Khaleda Zia's conviction for six months and decided to release her on humanitarian grounds considering her age.

The BNP chief has been in jail since she was convicted in the Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case on February 8, 2018. She was also convicted in the Zia Charitable Trust graft case on October 29, 2018. Her party claims both cases were politically motivated.

However, ailing Khaleda has been receiving treatment at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) Hospital in the capital since April 1, 2019.
