BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir urged the new Awami League committee to arrange a fair election under care taker government.

He was speaking to journalists after a doa mahfil (prayer meeting) at the BNP's central office in Dhaka's Naya Paltan on Saturday.

Fakrul said: “Awami League had been moving towards establishing one-party rule in the country in the last decade, but BNP hopes that the new committee will change their actions effectively.”

Fakhrul Islam Alamgir congratulated and hoped that the new Awami League committee would arrange election under caretaker government.

He criticized the failure of the Awami League to provide any guidance in the last decade on overcoming the economic, social and political crises the country is faced with.

Responding to a query about the BNP's council, he said the political culture in the country was very hostile making it difficult for any political activities to be conducted, reports BSS.

He said: "We are not allowed to hold councils in most places, especially in different districts and upazilas. However, we are trying to organize the party under the leadership of acting chairperson Tarique Rahman. In the meantime, we will try to hold councils."

The BNP secretary general accused the ruling Awami League of trying to build a state without democracy by completely ignoring the constitution.

When reporters asked him about some Awami League leaders holding the BNP-Jamaat responsible for the flaws in the Razakar list, he said: "It is the nature of the Awami League to blame others for its failures."

Zia Parishad organized a milad and doa mahfil in remembrance of Kabir Murad, a member of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s advisory council and also founding chairman of Zia Parishad.

Meanwhile, the Jatiya Party on Saturday greeted Sheikh Hasina on her election for the ninth time as president of the Awami League, the country's oldest political party.

Jatiya Party Chairman and Deputy Leader of the Opposition Golam Mohammed Quader also greeted Obaidul Quader on being elected general secretary of the party for a second consecutive term.

The JaPa chair expected that the new leadership would play a positive role in the country's political culture too.
