Khaleda's medical report submitted to SC

The filling of the report comes a day before the Appellate Division is set to hear Khaleda's bail petition in the Zia Charitable Trust corruption case

Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) Hospital authorities have submitted the update on BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia's health condition to the Supreme Court.

BSMMU Legal Officer Tania submitted the report to Supreme Court Registrar General Ali Akbar on Wednesday, BSMMU Vice-Chancellor Kanti Barua confirmed Bangla Tribune.

The filling of the report comes a day before the Appellate Division is set to hear Khaleda's bail petition in the Zia Charitable Trust corruption case on Thursday.

No comments, however, were available from apex court officials, including the registrar general and its spokesperson Mohammad Saifur Rahman.

On December 5, the full bench of the Appellate Division, headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain, had fixed December 12 to hear Khaleda's bail plea again, as the medical report was not submitted before it by the BSMMU medical board formed to treat her.

The top court's decision had led to three-hour-long chaos created by the defence lawyers, which then unprecedentedly forced the six-member bench to leave the courtroom without finishing the day's proceedings.

Khaleda, a three-time former prime minister, has been in prison since February last year, serving a total of 17 years in the Zia Orphanage Trust and Zia Charitable Trust corruption cases.

The 74-year-old was transferred to the BSMMU Hospital on April 1 this year for treatment from the old central jail on Nazim Uddin Road.

The High Court on July 31 rejected Khaleda’s bail petition in the Zia Charitable Trust graft case, prompting her counsels to move the apex court on November 14.

On November 28, the Appellate Division bench had ordered BSMMU authorities to submit the report before December 5.
