Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader called top brasses of Dhaka city’s two units, and asked to declare council dates immediately

Update : 18 Oct 2019, 05:27 PM

The Awami League high command has decided to hold council for all units before its national council scheduled on December 20-21.

On the other hand, councils for Dhaka city's two units are scheduled to be held before December.

Sources said, Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader called top brasses of the two units of Dhaka city, and asked them to announce council dates immediately.

He also warned that if unit leaders failed to announce the date, the Awami League high command will declare the dates.

On April 10, 2016, councils of both units were held, where AKM Rahmatullah and Sadek Khan were appointed president and general secretary of Dhaka North, while Abul Hasnat and Shah Alam Murad became president and general secretary of Dhaka South unit.

On September 11 of the same year, Dhaka North unit declared the names of presidents and general secretaries of 26 thanas, 46 wards, and nine unions, Dhaka South unit declared the names of presidents and general secretaries of 23 thanas, and 57 wards.

However, both city units' leaders failed to complete the full-fledged committee.

Awami League central leaders also tried several times to form the committees, but failed due to inner conflicts among the city leaders.

Awami League President Sheikh Hasina instructed Awami League presidium members Lt Col (Retd) Muhammad Faruq Khan, and Abdur Razzaque to form the committees earlier, and they also failed.

There are, however, allegations that the top level management, especially the general secretaries of the two committees, sheltered BNP-Jamaat members, and gave them posts in committees, along with their relatives, while seasoned and devoted leaders were dropped from the committees.

Awami League allegedly nominated Dhaka South City Corporation Mayor Sayeed Khokon so many times that the South unit’s General Secretary Shah Alam Murad tried to form pocket committees with his own followers.

In the meantime, leaders of Dhaka North unit also brought the same allegation against Sadek Khan.

Due to inner conflicts within the party, Awami League president, and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina banned full-fledged committees of thana, ward, and union level on two occasions.

Dhaka North unit’s General Secretary Sadek Khan said they will declare the date soon.

He said: “We called an extensive meeting on Thursday, and will take decision regarding the council date based on the discussion.”

Sadek added that North unit's council will be held before Awami League’s national council.

When contacted, Dhaka South unit's General Secretary Shah Alam Murad said they will call extensive meeting very soon, and will take decision over council after the meeting.

Sources confirmed the South unit’s extensive meeting is set to be held on October 25 or 26.
