Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader has said there is a possibility that Awami League may render its support for Jatiya Party (JaPa) candidate in the Rangpur-3 by-polls.
"We are thinking about the by-polls. There is a possibility that we may share the seat with Jatiya Party," Quader said after a meeting with Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation (BRTC) officials at Motijheel on Monday.
The by-election for the Rangpur 3 constituency, which fell vacant following the death of HM Ershad, will be held on October 5.
Awami League nominated Advocate Rezaul Karim Raju, the general secretary of Rangpur district Awami League, Jatiya Party nominated Rahgir Al Mahi alias Saad Ershad, eldest son of JaPa founding chairman late HM Ershad and party co-chairman Raushan Ershad, and BNP nominated Rita Rahman, chief of People's Party of Bangladesh, to contest the upcoming by-election.
Quader, also the road transport and bridges minister, said: "Corrupt officials do not have a place at BRTC.”
"Those who are involved in any sort of crime will be brought to justice, even their political identities cannot save them from being punished."
About the allegation against party men, he said: "Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is investigating the allegations against the leaders and officials, with the help of different agencies.”
On September 8, Awami League President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed dissatisfaction with Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) top brass and criticized them for their laziness.
Other leaders, including Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader, pointed out several allegations of bribes against the former Chhatra League President Rezwanul Haque Chowdhury Shovon, and General Secretary Golam Rabbani.
On September 14, Vice-Chancellor (VC) of Jahangirnagar University Prof Farzana Islam accused the two leaders of demanding a "4-6%" cut from the Tk1,445 crore development project at the university.
On the same day, the duo was asked to resign and Sheikh Hasina selected the new central leadership for the student wing of the ruling party.
