Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader has observed that his party lost the Comilla City Corporation elections due to rivalry among its local leaders.
Despite the loss of Awami League candidate in the voting that ended Thursday, Oaidul said Saturday that the government had won in this case by holding a free and fair election.
“It is a warning for the party ahead of the next general elections. We will not give the BNP any chance in the parliamentary polls,” Obaidul, also the road transport and bridges minister, told reporters at Rupganj while visiting the construction of Bhulta Flyover.
The minister hoped that the construction would be completed by June.
Without mentioning the name of BNP, Obaidul alleged that a major political party was patronising the communal forces and militants to destabilise the government.
“But we will not let them cultivate extremism in this country. We will step forward defeating these forces,” he added.
Local lawmaker Golam Dastagir Gazi, police officials and project officials accompanied the minister during the visit.
The government is funding the 1.24km flyover which will cost around Tk 240 crore.
