The voting has begun for by-polls in Sunamganj 2 constituency which fell vacant after the death of Awami League Presidium member Suranjit Sengupta.
Awami League-backed Dr Jaya Sengupta, wife of Suranjit, and independent candidate Sahed Ali Mahbub Hossain Razu are vying for the post. Seven-time lawmaker Suranjit died on February 5.
People started casting their votes from 8am Thursday and will continue till 4am. However, low voter turnout was seen due to bad weather after incessant rain on Wednesday night.
Some 252,430 voters are expected to exercise their franchise. Among them 126,228 are male voters while 126,202 are female.
Some 3,257 members of different law enforcement agencies have been deployed to ensure proper environment for voting in 110 polling centres.
