BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia will be taken to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) for medical checkups and tests, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan has said.

"Khaleda Zia will be taken to BSMMU for a few medical checkups, which cannot be done within the prison confines," he said at a press conference, held after his meeting with a six-member BNP delegation at the Secretariat, on Tuesday afternoon.

Shairul Kabir Khan, BNP chairperson's press wing official, and Sharif Mahmud Opu, the home minister's public relations officer, confirmed the matter.

The delegation, headed by BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, included Standing Committee members: Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Mirza Abbas, Nazrul Islam Khan, Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan, and Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury.

"We will decide on the date after the medical board decides on it," he said.

Despite the delegation's demands, Khaleda cannot be admitted to United Hospital for treatment, as the court has instructed her medical needs to only be addressed by BSMMU, Kamal said.

"The medical board, selected by the court, will provide its assessment of her, upon which she will be taken to BSMMU," he said. "We have already informed the Inspector General of police (prison) of the matter."

Meanwhile, Mirza Fakhrul has said he believes the home minister will keep his word.

"The minister has assured me that proper medical care of our chairperson will be taken," he said to reporters after the meeting. "I believe he will keep his word."

The delegation also talked about withdrawing the cases lodged against BNP leaders and activists, and other political issues.
