The government is not ensuring proper treatment for the jailed former prime minister, her party says

BNP on Sunday alleged that its Chairperson Khaleda Zia's health condition has deteriorated as the government is not ensuring proper treatment for her in jail.

“Though Khaleda Zia's health condition continues to deteriorate, she is not given treatment.

She's suffering from serious pain in her eyes, and she is unable to walk with her swollen legs. Her illness has turned acute now,” BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said, reports UNB.

Speaking at a press conference at BNP's Nayapaltan central office, he further said: “Amid such physical illness, she is being produced frequently before the court set up in a small room inside the jail, showing the government’s inhuman attitude. In fact, Khaleda Zia has been subjected to repression and harassment in the name of producing her before the court.”

The BNP leader alleged that the government is trying to destroy Khaleda gradually by depriving her of treatment.

He urged the prime minister to release Khaleda Zia from jail, saying: “Your desire to keep Khaleda Zia away from the national election has already been fulfilled.”

Rizvi alleged that police obstructed their party's protest programs across the country on Saturday, and arrested some BNP leaders and activists.

He condemned the police action, and demanded the immediate release of their party's arrested leaders and activists.

Replying to a question, the BNP leader said their party still did not finalize its decision on filing case with the High Court's election tribunal in connection with December 30 election irregularities.
