Bangladesh Chhatra Federation has emphasized their demands that the segmented education system—consisting of general, madrasa, and English medium instruction—be scrapped; in favour of a streamlined education system.
The students’ organization made the demand during a public rally held to mark its 34th founding anniversary, at the Dhaka University campus on Thursday.
In a press handout distributed during the event, the Chhatra Federation made a number of demands, including a streamlined and science-oriented education system; banning the practice of private tutoring and coaching for school and college students; and ensuring proper training and fair wages for teachers.
The organization also demanded that all alleged controversial content—such as communalism, distortion of history, unscientific topics, discrimination, sexism and racism—must be removed from textbooks.
The handout mentioned that an adequate number of teachers should be appointed for students at a 1:40 ratio, and more education institutions must be built.
The organization spoke in favour of providing educational institutions with modernized: libraries, laboratories, playgrounds, extra-curricular activities, and field trips; as well as provide special privileges for students in the transportation and healthcare sector.
Chhatra Federation demanded that special regulations be formulated to curb sexual harassment and discrimination at educational institutions across the country.
The organization mentioned that the illicit business surrounding admission to educational institutions, and the printing of textbooks, must be curbed; and books must be printed at local presses.
