Update : 15 Nov 2018, 10:14 AM

The Khulna metropolitan unit of Jatiya Oikya Front held its first meeting in the city and called to defer the election by a month.

Participants also called for the release of all incarcerated politicians—including BNP chief Khaleda Zia who has been convicted in two corruption cases.

BNP’s Organizing Secretary and metropolitan unit President Nazrul Islam Monju, a former parliamentarian, presided over Wednesday evening’s meeting.

Oikya Front leaders urged the public to join its movement to “restore democracy and voting rights.”  They called on: the Election Commission, the administration, law enforcement agencies, and the government to perform their duties neutrally.

At the meeting, the participants also urged the Election Commission to create a level playing field; as well as to take action against people breaching the election code and threatening BNP activists.

They also demanded all “fake cases” against opposition activists be withdrawn and that harassment of these activists end.

Leaders of: Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal, JSD, BNP, and 20-Party Alliance member-parties participated in the meeting.

Led by Dr Kamal Hossain, the new political alliance, Oikya Front, was formed on October 13, with BNP as one of its key members.

It has been pushing for seven demands that include the dissolution of Parliament before the general election; the release of political prisoners—including Khaleda; and the withdrawal of “false cases” against opposition activists.
