Jatiya Party has said it does not want to go to election under an unelected government.
At a press briefing after the dialogue at Jatiya Party chairman’s Banani office, Secretary General Ruhul Amin Howlader said the party wanted election under an interim government representing all elected parties.
“The dialogue between Jatiya Jote Chairman HM Ershad-led delegation and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was very successful,” Ruhul said.
He said the party had presented eight-point demands to the prime minister, including not using electronic voting machines in the upcoming general election. He added that further small scale discussions would be held with the government.
“We told them about holding a free, fair and participatory election. But it has to be in light of the constitution,” he added.
“Unelected polls-time governments of 1991, 1996 and 2001 failed to create a level-playing field. We want a representative government to hold a free. Fair and impartial election,” Ruhul said.
The secretary general said the delegation had also proposed the idea of provincial governments.
“It is difficult for one prime minister to rule a nation of 170-180 million people,” he said.
Near the end of the briefing, Ruhul said there might be surprises after the declaration of the election schedule, but he did not elaborate on the matter.
He said discussions with the government were an ongoing process and there would be further small-scale meetings with the prime minister.
