Politicians from across the spectrum united on the same platform on Thursday in two districts, pledging to end political violence and hold a peaceful election.
Around 90 politicians from six districts – Comilla, Brahmanbaria, Noakhali, Feni, Lakshmipur and Chandpur – joined the event at BARD Mainamati Hall in Comilla city.
The event is part of an ongoing nationwide campaign organized by Democracy International titled ‘Shantite Bijoy’ - Win with Peace. It aims to bolster the practice of peaceful elections and tolerant politics across Bangladesh.
Awami League, BNP and Jatiya Party leaders from the region took to the stage to offer their views on political tolerance and harmony and made a formal vow.
Former law minister and Awami League presidium member Abdul Matin Khasru said: “In a democracy many people will have many views but we must unite for peace.”
Brahmanbaria BNP President Hafizur Rahman Molla said in order for peace to return, political parity has to be achieved.
Apart from the politicians, local civil society members, Democracy International political fellows, social and cultural workers and local journalists were present at the event.
In Rajshahi, the event was held at the city’s Moonlight Garden Convention Centre. It was inaugurated by Awami League advisory council member Prof Abdul Khaleq.
Former Rajshahi mayor and BNP chairperson’s adviser Mizanur Rahman Minu said: “What Rajshahi thinks today the whole country follows tomorrow. We are the most peaceful place in the entire country.”
“All politicians from all parties work together for the betterment of Rajshahi,” he added.
Rajshahi district Awami League General Secretary Asaduzzaman Asad said: “There might be many different political ideologies in Rajshahi, but we have friendly relations among all of us.
“That is why we have less political violence than the rest of the country,” he added.
Democracy International Deputy Chief of Party Austin Power said: “Democracy International is making efforts to have all the parties participate in the coming elections in Bangladesh. We have discussed with all parties about contributing to the development of the nation.”
“There must be freedom of expression, without which democracy will be endangered. We are advising politicians and working together with citizens from all walks of life,” he added.
