Awami League-led 14-party alliance spokesperson Mohammad Nasim said the parties support the ongoing campaign to observe March 25 as National Genocide Day.
He made this statement at a press briefing at the Awami League party office in Dhanmondi in the city on Monday.
Workers' Party President MP Rashed Khan Menon and Samyabadi Dal Chairman Dilip Barua were also present among others at the press briefing.
On March 25, 1971, Pakistan occupation army launched “Operation Searchlight” wherein they indiscriminately killed hundreds of innocent Bangalis to suppress their quest for freedom. During the Liberation War, three million Bangalis were killed by the Pakistani forces and their local collaborators.
Several civil groups and organisations, including Antarjatik Juddhaparadh Ganabichar Andolan and Ekattorer Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee, have been demanding that the day be announced as National Genocide Day.
Earlier in February, in response to a proposal from Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed, Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury announced that the issue would be discussed in parliament on March 11.
