Jatiya Oikya Front gets permission to hold rally in Sylhet

The newly formed Jatiya Oikya Front has been given permission to organize a rally in Sylhet on Wednesday (October 24), under 14 conditions

Sylhet Metropolitan Commissioner (SMP) Md Golam Kibria confirmed the news yesterday evening.

Sylhet District BNP President and Jatiya Oikya Front spokesperson Abul Shamim said they were called to the SMP office and grantedpermission.

The permission to hold the rally, however, was tagged with 14 conditions. 

He also said: “As we have got the permission, we will prepare to arrange the rally in the city’s Registry field.”

Earlier on Saturday morning, eight BNP leaders went to the SMP office and applied for permission, which was denied after a wait of one and a half hours, sources from the BNPsaid.

BNP District Joint Secretary Ali Ahmed commenting on the matter yesterday said that as they were denied permission for the rally; they submitted a writ petition to the High Court. The hearing will take place today.

In the meantime the SMP granted them permission to hold the rally.

There was another scheduled program of the Front on Tuesday (October 23), which too was denied by the police.

Gana Forum President Dr Kamal Hossain along with other leaders of the Front are scheduled to visit the shrines of Hazrat Shahjalal and Hazrat Shah Paran, and also the grave of the commander-in-chief of the Bangladesh Forces during the 1971, Bangabir general MAG Osmani on the day of the rally, sources from the Jatiya Oikya Front said.
