Prospective candidates of the ruling Awami League (AL), Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), and Jatiya Party (Ershad), are busy campaigning for the next general elections in Natore constituency 2.

The constituency is comprised of Natore Sadar and Naldanga upazila. There are 1,000,000 voters in this constituency.

Sources said AL aspirants are currently engaged in hectic lobbying to garner party tickets. Many aspirants are also busy establishing mass contact.

BNP leaders, in contrast, are confined to parlour politics.

The BNP aspirants have not been seen holding public meetings yet. However, BNP candidates hope to take advantage of the AL’s factional feuds as they contest the polls.

More than 10 aspiring candidates of the AL, the BNP, and the JP, are in the race to get tickets from their respective parties in the district.

The aspirants have announced their candidature by putting up posters and billboards and by attending various social and religious functions. Villagers are busy discussing their candidates for the upcoming polls.

From AL, current MP Shafiqul Islam Shimul, former state minister for youth and sports Ahad Ali Sarker, AL district unit joint secretary Shariful Islam Ramzan, Sadar upazila unit vice-president Uma Chowdhury Joly, district unit Jubo League president Bashirur Rahman Chowdhury Ahia , former Sadar upazila parishad vice-chairman Asaduzzaman Asad, and the district unit’s AL organising secretary, advocate Malek Sheikh, are trying to get nominations.

According to party insiders, the dispute has deepened among party leaders.

Since the party has been in power for many years, some beneficiary groups have emerged in the party, led by the current MP, which may aggravate the situation, said local sources.

All prospective candidates have taken positions against the MP.

Factional disputes between among the leaders may play a big role for the party in the elections, said insiders.

BNP candidates may take advantage of the AL’s factional feuds, they said.

Local BNP leader, Sabina Yasmin, wife of Former BNP Deputy Minister of Land, Ruhul Quddus Talukder Dulu, has started campaigning for him.

Jatiya Party (Ershad) central leader, Mojibur Rahman Sentu, has started visiting different areas to woo voters.

Sadar upazila AL president Salam Sarker said the people of the constituency want to see AL in power.

On the other-hand, Farhad Ali, BNP’s district unit publicity secretary, said people of the constituency will elect Ruhul Quddus in the next JS polls.
