Update : 20 Sep 2018, 03:56 PM

Police have foiled an attempt by the Left Democratic Alliance (LDA) to lay siege to the Election Commission's office.

Law enforcement erected a barricade at Sonargaon intersection, in Karwan Bazar area, while The Alliance marched towards the Election Commission's office, in Agargaon, on Thursday afternoon.

As the left activists refused to leave the location, police charged batons to disperse them.

Later, The Alliance's leaders called off their protest for the day and held a brief rally there.

Ganasonhoti Andolan Chief Coordinator Zonayed Saki spoke at the rally, among others.

DMP’s Tejgaon Zone Assistant Commissioner (AC) Abu Tayaab Md Arif Hossain said they had information about another group that may have tried to sabotage the rally. “That is why were trying to talk to their leaders and activists,” AC Tyaab said.

“In the meantime, around 30-40 people attacked the police from behind. The police also retaliated. At that time, a few members of the police were injured,” he added.

“No one was arrested in the incident,” AC Tayaab said.

Earlier, a procession was lead from the National Press Club and paraded through the Matsya Bhaban, Shahbagh, and Banglamotor areas.
