BNP has said the government must quit as people will not allow ruling Awami League to hold the national election under Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
“This time, you (government) have to go, no matter how many plots and evil designs you resort to to cling to power,” BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said a press conference at the party's Naya Paltan central office on Sunday.
He said there is no alternative to holding the election under a non-party neutral government to ensure people's voting rights, reports UNB.
“Sheikh Hasina is the enemy of a fair election. Holding the polls under her means snatching people's right to vote,” he said.
Rizvi said the government should release Khaleda Zia from jail and hold the election after dissolving the parliament.
He also trashed Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader's comment that Khaleda Zia's release is not possible out of legal process. “People have rejected his comment.”
Quader said Khaleda's release depends on the court, not on Awami League.
The BNP leader alleged that the government is repeatedly obstructing Khaleda's release on bail from the apex court through various tactics. “Khaleda Zia has been kept in jail now at the behest of the government.”
He said the government must amend the constitution to include the provision of the election-time neutral government to ensure a credible and inclusive election.
He further said BNP is continuing its movement for restoring people's voting rights to hold the election under a non-party administration. “Any movement to realize people's demands never failed in the world. Our movement will also be successful.”
Rizvi alleged that police arrested 89 party activists all over the country during the celebration of BNP's 40th founding anniversary programs on Saturday.
He protested the arrests and demanded the government release them immediately.
