‘Khaleda could contest polls even if convicted’

Update : 26 Feb 2017, 12:02 AM
Amid speculations on BNP’s strategy about next general elections and whether Khaleda would have legal clearance to participate in polls depending on verdict of pending lawsuits against her, Moudud said BNP is preparing to both contest in the elections and initiate a movement if deemed necessary under the leadership of Khaleda. In a speech at a Bangladesh Labour Party programme on Saturday , Moudud said: “Some are saying that in case BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia was convicted by a court, she would not have the legitimacy to run in the next elections. But that is not true. She would be able to run even if she was convicted.” He added that convictions in the baseless lawsuits would only increase her popularity even further. Moudud said it would not be a big issue if the Election Commission favoured the ruling alliance in the next elections. “If she [Khaleda] gets convicted by special court, we will appeal to a higher court,” he said. Moudud added that he hopes a court would grant Khaleda bail even if she gets convicted. When contacted over the phone, Anti-Corruption Commission lawyer Khurshid Alam Khan said: “No one can say what the verdict of an ongoing trial is going to be. Proceedings are pending with the High Court and the trial court concerned. I think he [Moudud] made the comments for political purposes.” Khaleda is currently being tried in multiple cases.
