A Chhatra Dal leader was killed when a clash broke out during a victory parade of the newly elected Sylhet Mayor and BNP leader Ariful Haque Chowdhury.
The victim is Faizur Rahman Raju, 26, who died around 10:45pm Saturday at Osmani Medical College Hospital, the hospital's police outpost in-charge SI Faruk Ahmed said.
The incident took place near Ariful's home in Kumarpara, in front of Malancha Community Centre, on Saturday evening, as Ariful, accompanied by BNP and Chhatra Dal activists reached the spot, coming from the returning officer's office in Mendibag.
Ariful was declared mayor earlier in the evening.
The clash took place reportedly between the Chhatra Dal factions led by Ekhlasur Rahman Munna and Abdur Rakib Chowdhury.
Former organizing secretary of Sylhet district Chhatra Dal Ekhlasur said his rivals Abdur Rakib, Delwar Hossain Dinar and Mostafiz led the attack on him and his supporters.
He claimed the attackers also fired on them.
Abdur Rakib could not be reached for comments.
Sylhet Metropolitan Police spokesperson ADC Abdul Wahab said police had visited the spot.
