Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has condemned the latest hike in the price of household and industrial gas.
“Ruling Awami League government has decided to hike gas price only for looting and increasing expenditures of the countrymen,” BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi raised the allegation in a press briefing at party’s central office on Friday morning.
He also said the decision to hike gas prices was irrational, unethical and would create a massive pressure in the economy.
“The gas price is being doubled after a gap of only nine months of last hike. Moreover, it is not clear at all for which reason the price is being almost doubled.
“I would like to condemn and protest this kind of unfair and anti-people price hike. We [BNP] strongly oppose this decision and the government should withdraw the decision,” the senior BNP leader added.

He also criticised the authorities concerned for not holding the scheduled mass hearing on the proposed gas price hike in December last year.
“The government has decided to hike gas price although the state-run gas companies are making overwhelming profits,” he alleged further.
Rizvi again said: “The present government is not elected by the people, does not think about general peoples’ interest, that is why it can take such decision.”
In an immediate reaction on Thursday, the BNP called upon the government to withdraw the decision to hike gas prices, terming the decision “irrational” and “unethical”.
Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) on Thursday announced that it was raising the price of gas for all sectors.
