Quader: BNP attempts to distort govt’s image in front of the world

The ruling party leader says the elections in three cities have been fair and peaceful

Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader has accused BNP of distorting the image of the government in front of the world by attempting to make the city elections controversial.

He came up with the accusation during a post-election press briefing at the party president’s political office in Dhanmondi on Monday afternoon.

“…This party [BNP] has been following a strategy of election boycott to create an issue ahead of the general election,” the Awami League leader said.

Quader, also the road transport and bridges minister, said that the government has thwarted BNP’s “evil attempt” because the elections in three cities were fair and peaceful.

“There was no report of causalities during the polls, and so we can’t say the election is not held in a free, fair and credible manner,” he said.

Dismissing allegations of vote rigging in Barisal, the senior Awami League leader said BNP’s mayoral candidate in the city Mujibur Rahman Sarwar boycotted the polls to create a fuss.

“BNP did not wish to win the elections and the party’s mayoral runner for Rajshahi staged a scene without casting his vote,” Quader said.
