BNP: Gas tariff hike irrational and unethical

Update : 23 Feb 2017, 11:12 PM
BNP has called upon the government to withdraw the decision to hike gas prices, terming the decision ‘irrational’ and ‘unethical’. The party held a press conference at the BNP chairperson’s Gulshan office on Thursday, immediately after Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission announced the rise in prices for both household and industrial gas consumption through a circular. The utilities regulator has decided to raise gas prices by almost 50%. The price hike will take effect in two phases in March and June. Reading out a statement at the press conference, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said the decision to hike gas prices is irrational, unethical and would create massive pressure in the economy.

"People will not accept this decision," added the BNP spokesperson. He also criticised the government for not holding the mass hearing on the proposed gas price hike which was scheduled to be held in December last year. “It is the government's strategy to increase revenue through increasing gas tariffs, and the same logic may also result in a hike in electricity price,” he added. Asked whether BNP is going to announce any programme protesting the decision, Mirza Fakhrul said they would make the decision after further discussions.
