BNP: PM broke quota reform promise

The BNP leader made the remark at a program organized by pro-BNP Swadhinata Forum at the National Press Club

BNP on Friday claimed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had broken her promise to reform the quota system of recruitment to government jobs.

“The prime minister or the government is trying to back off from its promise [to abolish the quota system]. This is not acceptable at all. If there is any barrier to cancelling the quota, you (the prime minister) can surely remove it through the High Court,” said BNP Standing Committee member Moudud Ahmed, as quoted by UNB.

The BNP leader made the remark at a program organized by pro-BNP Swadhinata Forum at the National Press Club.

The allegation follows in the wake of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s comment on Thursday, where she said the freedom fighters quota system could not be abolished due to a High Court verdict.

Moudud, a former law minister, added that he had no knowledge of a High Court verdict on the quota for freedom fighters. “Even if there is a verdict, it is not about keeping quotas for the grandchildren of freedom fighters.”
