Top BNP leaders were denied permission to meet with party Chairperson Khaleda Zia at the Dhaka Central Jail.
BNP claimed that the party leaders went to meet the former prime minister for Eid around 12:15pm on Saturday, but they were barred by police.
BNP standing committee member Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain said top leaders, including Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, were unable to meet with Khaleda Zia.
He said even though they had earlier sought permission to meet with the BNP chief on Eid day, they were not allowed to through with it.
Khaleda Zia was sentenced to five years in jail on February 8 for embezzling funds meant for an orphanage set up as a trust fund under her late husband Ziaur Rahman’s name.
Since May, top BNP leaders have been alleging that Khaleda was not receiving proper treatment facilities in jail, and the government is barring her family and personal physicians from visiting her.
