Update : 12 May 2018, 01:49 AM

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has inaugurated the two-day 29th National Council of Bangladesh Chhatra League at the Suhrawardy Udyan in Dhaka.

With the national anthem playing, the national flag and the flag of Chhatra League were hoisted as Hasina released doves and balloons during the inaugural session Friday afternoon.

Outgoing Chhatra League President Saifur Rahman Sohag and General Secretary SM Jakir Hossain, and other leaders and activists of both Awami League and its student wing were present.

Hasina, who is also the president of Awami League, had arrived around 4pm at the venue, which was already packed with thousands of leaders and activists of Chhatra League who came from across the country.

This National Council is long-anticipated, since unlike the previous three elections, this time the organization’s central leadership would be chosen by Hasina instead of an election.

The names of the new president and general secretary of the organization would be announced on Saturday.

Chhatra League’s last council was held on July 25-26, 2015, four years after the previous one.
