Allegations have been raised against several Awami League leaders for spreading false rumours through several fake Facebook IDs against Law Minister and Member of Parliament from Brahmanbaria-4 Kashba-Akhaura, Anisul Huq, and his personal secretary, Awami League leader, Rashedul Kawsar Bhuiya.
The incident has sparked controversy among local Awami League leaders. Seven cases under section 57 of the ICT Act have been lodged by party leaders on this issue. Some of them list the names of former MP and Brahmanbaria district Awami League Vice-President, Md Shah Alam, and Central Jubo League leader, Shyamol Kumar Roy, and their followers. Others accuse anonymous culprits.
Vice-President of district Chhatra League, Md Ibrahim, said on this subject: "36 Facebook IDs have been used to spread false rumours, using indecent language, against our leader the law minister, and his personal secretary. Sometimes these IDs have also posted offensive posts against Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, and his daughter, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina."
He claimed that several of those IDs have come from former MP, Md Shah Alam, and Jubo League leader, Shyamol Kumar Roy.
"They are involved in this," said Md Ibrahim. "However, I did not include anyone's name specifically in the case I lodged under section 57 of the ICT Act. Their names will be unearthed after police investigations."
Similar sentiments were echoed by Joint Convener of Kashba upazila Awami League, MJ Hakkani, when he complained against Shah Alam and Shyamol as well.
"These fake Facebook IDs were created to impede the development of Kashba and Akhaura upazilas," said Hakkani. "I want the perpetrators to be arrested for their crimes."
Kashba municipality Mayor Emran Uddin Jewel said: "All of these acts are former MP Md Shah Alam and his followers' misdeeds. They thought they would engage in criminal activities by using our law minister. But failing in that, they started to spread rumours against him.”
"Awami League leaders from Kashba upazila have conducted demonstrations, forming human chains and burning effigies of those involved," said Emran.
General Secretary of Brahmanbaria district Awami League, Al Mamun Sarker, said: "Although it is true, rumours are being spread through Facebook posts, it is not yet clear who perpetrated these acts. We want the actual criminals to be brought to book soon."
However, the accused MP Md Shah Alam and Shyamol Kumar Roy were both unreachable over the phone.
Talking about the cases lodged on this issue, Brahmanbaria Kashba-Akhaura Senior Assistant Police Superintendent (ASP) Abdul Karim said: "On Wednesday and Thursday, a total of seven cases were lodged under section 57 of the ICT Act. Some of them mention Shah Alam, Shyamol, and their followers' names, while others were lodged anonymously."
He added: "We sent these cases to police headquarters for approval. From there, they were enlisted after getting approved. Currently the cases are under CID supervision. We will inform updates after we gain information from the CID."
Meanwhile, Awami League, Jubo League, and Chhatra League, activists have been expressing their rage against the Facebook IDs in Binauti union of Kashba for the last few days. Protest demonstrations were held on the Syedabad and Cumilla-Sylhet highway on Saturday. Leaders and activists also formed a human chain in front of the supermarket in the municipality town to show their solidarity protesting the rumours on Thursday.
