Central, Gazipur Awami League leaders meet to finalize game plan ahead of city polls

Awami League central leaders on Sunday held a meeting with Gazipur district leaders to ensure the ruling party’s victory in the Gazipur City Corporation polls slated for May 15. According to party sources, Awami League leaders and lawmakers of Gazipur have been at loggerheads for a long time. Due to the internal feuds, three party nominated candidates had lost in the district’s union level election recently. After that, central leaders feared that Awami League’s mayoral candidate Jahangir Alam will lose if the leaders and activists in Gazipur city do not work together before and during the polls, sources said. They figured that Jahangir’s defeat would heavily demoralize the party activists before the general election, which is only eight months away. "At the meeting, Obaidul Quader urged everyone to work together for the party candidate and ensure his victory. He also warned that if anyone works against the party candidate, they will face strict actions," said Mohammad Iqbal Hossain Sabuj, general secretary of Awami League’s Gazipur district unit, who attended the meeting. Among others, Liberation War Affairs Minister and Gazipur 1 lawmaker AKM Mozammel Haque, Awami League Joint General Secretary Jahangir Kabir Nanak, Organising Secretaries Ahmad Hossain, AKM Enamul Haque Shamim, Mohidul Hassan Chowdhury Nowfel, Cultural Secretary Asim Kumar Ukil, Awami League’s Gazipur city unit President Ajmat Ullah and the other lawmakers of the district were also present at the meeting.
