Awami League and BNP are concerned over leaders who were denied party nomination to contest the Khulna city corporation polls.
The top brasses of both parties are also worried about victory of mayoral and councilor candidates as the rejected candidates might not cooperate with them during campaigns.
Under these circumstances, senior leaders of these parties asked leaders, who submitted nomination papers for councilor posts after being refused from the party, to cancel their candidacies and work for the mayoral and councilor candidates, otherwise tough measures will be taken against them.
On Sunday night, Awami League Khulna metropolitan unit held a meeting chaired by its General Secretary Mizanur Rahman Mizan. The meeting asked the candidates other than party nominated councilor candidates to withdraw their nominations, said a press release.
The party will take action against those who do not comply with the decision, it said.
Central Awami League leader SM Kamal Hossain was present at the meeting.
On the other hand, BNP Khulna metropolitan unit also held a meeting on Sunday night and asked those who were denied party nomination to withdraw their candidacies and work for the nominated mayoral and councilor contestants, according to a press release.
