Awami League nominated mayoral candidate for the Khulna City Corporation (KCC) polls, Talukdar Abdul Khalek, and his opponent, BNP backed aspirant Nazrul Islam Manju, have brought allegations of misconduct against each other.
Manju submitted a complaint on Tuesday to the local election office against Khalek, over alleged breaking of the electoral code of conduct.
Confirming the matter to this reporter, Returning Officer Md Yunus Ali said, “We have received a copy of the complaint [against Khalek] submitted by the BNP over alleged conduct violations.”
On the same day, the ruling party candidate made counter allegations against Manju, saying the BNP aspirant attached a sheaf of paddy [BNP’s symbol] to his vehicle, which violates the electoral code of conduct.
These candidates from opposing parties traded allegations against each other over concealing information on their election affidavits earlier on Monday.

In his complaint, BNP aspirant Nazrul Islam Manju wrote: “Lawmakers, Begum Monnuzan Sufian, SM Mostafa Rashidi, and Mizanur Rahman, have given statements in support of Awami League nominated candidate, Talukdar Abdul Khalek, violating the electoral code.
“The three above mentioned MPs made derogatory and false comments against me and my party [the BNP], which is a clear violation of section 22 of the city corporation electoral code of conduct.”
Reacting to Manju’s allegations, ruling party mayoral candidate, Talukdar Abdul Khalek, said: “The Awami League is a large political party, and numerous organizational activities are carried out on behalf of the party every day.”
“The three lawmakers gave those statements as a part of regular organizational activity, and not as a part of election campaigning.”
Khalek pointed out that BNP candidate Manju violated the electoral code of conduct by attaching a sheaf of paddy [BNP’s symbol] to his vehicle, as formal campaigning for the KCC polls is yet to begin.
