Update : 15 Apr 2018, 06:18 PM
BNP on Sunday alleged that though its chairperson Khaleda Zia is severely ill in jail, she has so far not been given any treatment. "Our chairperson, who is also a three-time prime minister of the country, is critically ill, but she's not getting any treatment in jail," he said, while speaking at a press briefing at the party's Nayapaltan headquarters. The top BNP leader demanded Khaleda be released immediately from jail so she can receive treatment as per her needs.

"Our chairperson has long been suffering from arthritis and eye problems. Some other problems also have developed in her body as she has been kept in jail in an unhealthy atmosphere.” Referring to a report of a government-formed medical board that Khaleda has problem in her neck and waist, Rizvi said the BNP chief needs to undergo some important tests like magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to diagnose her diseases. "It's not possible to identify her specific physical problems only by x-ray and blood tests [conducted by the medical board].”

On April 1, the government formed a medical board with four professors of Dhaka Medical College Hospital to examine Khaleda’s health condition and ensure her treatment, as she suddenly fell sick in jail on March 29. On April 8, she was taken to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) for her health check-ups. The 73-year old former prime minister has been in Old Dhaka Central Jail on Nazimuddin Road since February 8, after a trial court sentenced her to five years’ imprisonment in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case.
