The police have not given permission to the BNP for a public gathering in Sylhet, even after the party relocated the venue.
The Officer-In-Charge of Kotwali police station Gausul Hossain has confirmed the matter.
District Secretary General of BNP Ali Ahmed said, “We first wanted to hold the mass gathering at the city’s City Point area. As the police authority denied permission for that, we later decided to organize it at Registrary Maath.”
“We have submitted a written application for permission as well, and our workers are working tirelessly for the arrangements,” Ali further added.
As of Sunday afternoon, police had not given any reply to the BNP officials.
As parts of District protests all over the country, this gathering has been called on April 10 to protest the arrest of BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia.
This event will be graced by BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir along with Standing Committee members including Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan, Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, Mirza Abbas, and Gayeshwar Chandra Roy.
In order to make the gathering successful, Sylhet city BNP activists have distributed leaflets through various wards of the city.
At one point the distribution of leaflets turned into a huge public procession.
Important BNP members present at the distribution of leaflets included Advisor of BNP Chairperson Abdul Muktadir, Sylhet Metro President Nasim Hussain, and Sylhet BNP Secretary General Badruzzaman Selim.
