KCC polls: BNP to recommend Moniruzzaman as mayoral candidate

The Khulna city unit of BNP has decided to recommend incumbent mayor and the party’s metropolitan unit General Secretary Moniruzzaman Moni as the mayoral candidate for the upcoming Khulna city corporation (KCC) polls. BNP city unit made the decision in an executive committee meeting held on Wednesday. The recommendation will formally be sent to the central command on Thursday. Confirming the matter, Khulna city BNP President Nazrul Islam Manju told the Dhaka Tribune: “The city unit has recommended Moniruzzaman Moni as the mayoral candidate, and this proposal will be sent to the central command soon. “However, final decision in this regard will be taken by them [central command]. The city unit has also formed a nomination board for finalizing a list of councillor candidates.”

Nazrul added: “The list of candidates for 31 general ward and ten reserved councillor posts will be finalized on April 9. Interested candidates can apply for party nomination on Thursday and Friday. “Councillor aspirants will be interviewed for three days at the Khulna BNP office from Saturday." The correspondent has learned that the city BNP formed the eight-member nomination board for finalizing candidates for each general and reserved ward in the city, during Wednesday's meeting. The board is chaired by city unit President Nazrul Islam Manju and comprised of senior leaders such as Shahruzzaman Mortuza, Kazi Sekendar Ali Dalim and Syeda Nargis Ali. At the executive committee meeting, it was announced that councillor post aspirants will be able to submit application for party nomination from 10am to 8pm on Thursday and Friday.

The nomination board, in presence of presidents or general secretaries of different city wards, will interview nomination seekers at the party office on April 7, 8 and 9. The city unit will also select and train members for the vote centre committee and agents from a pool of loyal BNP leaders and activists. In the previous KCC election, held on June 15, 2013, BNP-backed candidate Md Moniruzzaman Moni was elected mayor, while a total of 19 and five BNP-supported candidates were elected as general ward and reserved ward councillors respectively.
