Five aspiring Awami League candidates are strongly competing in the Gazipur City Corporation mayoral polls. They are busy running promotional campaigns and strengthening public relations.
This is the first time the party symbol will be used in the city corporation mayoral polls. Tensions run high in the race for the candidacy.
The first Gazipur City Corporation polls were held on July 6, 2013 and, as it was the case back then, five candidates are aspiring nominees again.
The candidates are: Gazipur Awami League president Advocate Azmat Ullah Khan, Gazipur former city corporation acting mayor Asadur Rahman Kiron, Gazipur Awami League General Secretary Jahangir Alam, Gazipur Jubo League
Convener Kamrul Ahsan Sarkar Rasel and Joint Convener Saiful Islam.
The Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda announced the schedules for the Gazipur and Khulna City
Corporation polls on Saturday. Polls will take place at these locations on May 15.
Advocate Azmat Ullah Khan said: “During the first city corporation polls there were some mistakes and internal feud; that is why BNP won the polls. We have overcome those issues in the last 5 years. Meanwhile, the public has turned away from the BNP mayor as he could not fulfil their expectations.”
Awami League’s General Secretary of Gazipur unit Advocate Jahangir Alam did not get nominated last time but managed to gain his current position in the party. Preferring anonymity, several of his supporters said he is ahead in the nominations. He is known for his participation and contribution to party activities. Leaders and activists said he has been holding feasts for the underprivileged in each ward office for a number of years.

Jahangir Alam said his activities through the years have proved that he is capable of working for the people and the party. He also said the top leaders, party activists and citizens are expecting him to win the nomination.
According to sources, the supporters of the aspiring candidates are going door-to-door courting support for the boat symbol.
Kamrul Ahsan Rasel said: “The party wants a competent leader who will work relentlessly for the public. I think I am qualified for the position. I am hopeful that I will be able to restore Gazipur to its former glory if the party decides to select me.”
His supporters said he has been campaigning for the last two years by putting up posters and billboards in each ward. He is ahead of the competition in terms of promotional activities.
The supporters of Asadur Rahman Kiron said he will also seek nomination. The former acting mayor of Gazipur City Corporation has been participating in many social activities in order to gather support from the public.
Election Commission Secretary Helal Uddin Ahmed said: “On July 6, 2013 the first Gazipur City Corporation polls were held. The first meeting was held on September 5. According to the law, the city corporation will have completed its five-year duration on September 4, 2018. ”
Election Officer of Gazipur sadar upazila Md Aslam said: “The total size of this city corporation is 329.90 square kilometres. It has 57 general wards and 19 reserved wards. There is a total of 11,68616 voters in the area. There are 5,91698 male voters and 5,72463 females voters. In 2013, the total number of voters were 10,26930.”
In the 2013 city corporation polls, votes were cast in 392 polling centres. BNP nominee Professor MA Mannan got 3,65444 votes and Awami League nominee Azmat Ullah Khan got 2,58867 votes.
