The BNP has announced plans to hold a rally on March 29 at the Suhrawardy Udyan demanding the release of party chief Khaleda Zia.
Party’s Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir informed the media about the plan on Monday.
“We hope the government will take necessary steps to [allow us] hold the rally,” he told the press briefing at the party headquarters.
The party has often accused the government of not allowing it hold protest programs.
Fakhrul said the BNP would demonstrate on March 20 across the country.
“The BNP was not given permission to hold a rally today (March 19). I called up them [Dhaka Metropolitan Police authorities] several times but they did not receive my calls. A BNP team went to meet them but they [team] were refused,” he said.
Khaleda, a former prime minister, is currently behind bars serving a five-year jail sentence in a corruption case. Her party claims the case is politically motivated.
The High Court granted her bail earlier this month but the top court on Monday stayed the order until May 8.This article was first published on banglatribune.com
