AL-BNP clash injures six in Barisal

Update : 05 Jan 2017, 06:44 PM
At least six people have been injured in a clash between supporters of the ruling Awami League and BNP in Barisal city on Thursday's third anniversary of the 2014 elections. Two of the injured were admitted to hospital, sources said. “AL supporters attacked BNP men at 10:45am while we were preparing to bring out a peaceful procession from the party office to mark Democracy Killing Day,” said Ziauddin Sikder, acting president of Barisal BNP city unit. Barisal District BNP president (South) Ebaidul Haq Chand condemned the incident, saying AL supporters made the attack on BNP under the protection of police personnel. BNP claimed that Chhatra League and Jubo League activists attacked a BNP man near Anami Lane leading to Sadar Road at 12:30pm. Barisal Kotwali police station OC Md Awlad Hossain said police intervened, dispersed the trouble makers and brought the situation under control. In contrast to the opposition party, the ruling Awami League and its front organisations claim that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina protected the country's democracy by holding the polls of the 10th Jatiya Sangsad (Parliament) on January 5 in 2014. They are celebrating 'Victory Day for Democracy' through various programmes across the country. Barisal District Awami League Secretary Advocate Talukder Md Yunus MP said no attack was made on BNP men in the city.
