Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader has said they will sit to discuss Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha’s much-talked-about vacation plea and statement to the media in the party’s Working Committee meeting on Saturday evening.
“After the Working Committee’s meeting, we will inform you about our stance on the chief justice’s leave application and his statement,” he told reporters at a reception programme to welcome freshers of Viqarunnisa Noon School and College in Dhaka Saturday.
Before leaving for Australia, Chief Justice Sinha on Friday evening told journalists that he was physically fit, completely contradicting a government narrative that he took a month-long leave on grounds of ill health.
He also said he was quite embarrassed about how a specific political quarter, including some ministers and the prime minister herself, criticised him over one of his rulings. Sinha was referring to the full verdict in the 16th Amendment to the Constitution case.
Quader, also the road transport and bridges minister, said: “On the one hand the chief justice submitted an application [to the government] seeking a one-month sick leave, but on the other hand he told journalists that he is not sick.
“We will discuss everything in our Working Committee meeting.”
Among others, Law Minister Anisul Huq will attend the meeting to be held at Ganabhaban around 6pm.
