Jamaat-e-Islami chief Maqbul Ahmad alleged in a statement to the press on Tuesday that the ruling party had in effect began waging war on the judiciary with its actions.
He said: “Awami League has declared war against the apex court of the country. They have set out to destroy the judiciary and constitutional institutions.
“This government has no right to remain in power – which they conspired to get. They were never elected to power. They have no ethical grounds to hold on to their throne.”
The Jamaat chief said PM Sheikh Hasina had held the 2014 election to adhere to the rules. He claimed the prime minister’s desire for power had clouded her better judgment.
Maqbul called upon the citizens of the country to fight the conspiracy against the state, people and the judiciary.
He ended the press conference saying: “Awami League had called for hartal on 173 days to get their demands met. And now they go about ignoring everyone else’s opinions. They have gotten rid of the caretaker government to cement their grip on power, which has led to this crisis. If they hold the elections under their own regime, the populace will boycott the farce they call an election.”This article was first published on Bangla Tribune
