Pre-UP election violence continued till yesterday in many areas of the country ahead of the second phase of the polls held on March 31 in 710 union parisads.
In Munshiganj, our correspondent reported at least 10 people were injured in a clash between the followers of two Union Parisad (UP) election contestants in Koykirton area of Shamsiddya UP in Sreenagar upazila.
Local sources said the clash ensued between the followers of Awami-League backed candidate Shafiqul Islam Mamun and BNP backed candidate Hazi Mohammad Ratan. They were campaigning in the area.
At one stage, the supporters of both the groups attacked each other which left 10 injured.
The election will be held on March 31 in 14 union councils under the upazila.
In Gopalganj, election of Hiron union parisad has been postponed for 15 days in the district, siad our correspondent.
Sources said Munshi Ebadul Islam and Golam Kibria Daria, two Awami League leaders tried to get nomination from the party. The party provided nomination papers to the both and they submitted the papers to the election commissioner.
The election commission cancelled their nomination.
Later, they filed a writ petition with the High Court asking nomination.
Election Comissioner Ohiduzzaman said the court cancelled their nomination and ordered to participate in the election as independent candidate.
On the other hand, miscreants attacked a UP member candidate in Boulti union under Sadar upazila.
Sources said the miscreants assaulted Uzzal Roy, candidate of 4 No word while he was campaigning for vote.
Uzzal said his rival candidate Gopal Banik’s men attacked him. Sub Inspector Farid Hossen of Sadar police station said three persons were arrested in this connection.
According to the reports of our Kishorganj correspondent, police recovered 2,000 ballot papers from Borobhag village snatched away on March 22 in Latibabad union parisad under Sadar upazila.
Returning officer Md Ashraful Aalm said miscreants had looted the ballot papers while the officers were counting votes after election. Later, a case was filed accusing 25 persons.
Mir Mosharraf Hossain, officer-in-charge of Sadar Model police station, said on information the police recovered the papers from the road side of the village.
The ballot papers were from Borobhag A U Senior Madrasa centre, he said. The Election Commission announced the second phase of election fixing 31 March for balloting.
According to the schedule, the deadline for the submission of nomination paper is 2 March, while the nomination papers will be scrutinised on 5 and 6 March and the last date for the withdrawal of candidature is 13 March.
