Jamaat-e-Islami has called dawn-to-dusk hartal for Monday across the country protesting what it said conspiracy to abandon Islam as state religion.
Dr Shafiqur Rahman, acting secretary general of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, made the announcement in a press statement issued on Sunday.
“Bangladesh is a Muslim country and Islam has been included in the constitution as a state religion and people did not raise any demand to remove Islam from the constitution,” reads the statement.
The countrymen would not accept the government’s move to abandon Islam as state religion, it added.
The party urged all to observe a peaceful hartal in protest of the alleged initiative of the government.
Ambulance, hospitals, fire service and vehicles related to the media will remain out of the hartal purview.
