A Dhaka court yesterday issued warrant for the arrest of 17 leaders and activists of the BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami in a case filed under the Explosive Substances Act.
Metropolitan Sessions Judge Md Kamrul Hossain Molla issued the arrest warrants after accepting the charges levelled against 31 BNP-Jamaat leaders and activists including BNP’s Joint Secretary General Barkatullah Bulu and central leader Ruhul Quddus Talukder Dulu in the case.
The court issued the arrest warrants against the 17 accused as they did not appear before it during the hearing. The court also directed the officer-in-charge of Mohammadpur police station to submit reports by May 11 on the execution of arrest warrants.
BNP leaders Aman Ullah Aman, Ruhul Kabir Rizvi Ahmed, Ishak Sarkar, Monir Hossain and 20 others secured bail from the court in the case.
According to the charge sheet, some miscreants torched a bus with a petrol bomb in Mohammadpur Beribadh area on January 22 last year amid a countrywide blockade programme sponsored by the BNP-led 20-party alliance. Bus helper Md Shohag was critically injured in the incident.
Later Sub-Inspector Mezbah Uddin of Mohammadpur police filed a case against the accused. SI Noor Islam Sikder, also investigation officer of the case, submitted the charge sheet on August 23 last year.
