Update : 19 Mar 2016, 07:17 PM

A rebel candidate of the Awami League, contesting the union parishad (UP) polls in Barisal’s Muladi upazila, was sent to prison for threatening to commit suicide yesterday while demanding for a free and fair election.

The candidate, Engineer Yusuf Ali, contesting the polls for the post of chairman in Kazirchar union parishad, dug a grave for himself  in his courtyard when he threatened to kill himself, local sources said.

Confirming the matter to the Dhaka Tribune, Muladi police station Matiar Rahman Yusuf was arrested by police on Friday night and Sub-Inspector Nasir Hossain as a complainant lodged a case against him early yesterday for creating tension, violating election propagation rule and threatening to commit suicide.

Yusuf was sent to Barisal Judicial Magistrate’s Court in the afternoon, where Senior Judicial Magistrate Md Enayetullah rejected his bail prayer and sent him to jail.

According to locals, Yusuf, who was Awami League’s Muladi unit president, decided to become a rebel candidate in the UP polls after failing to get party nomination.

On Friday afternoon, digging a grave in the courtyard of his house, Yusuf declared to commit suicide if the UP election was not held freely and fairly in his area.
