Fakhrul discharged from bomb attack case

A Dhaka court has discharged BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and 25 other BNP-Jamaat men from a case filed over the bomb attack on a bus that killed two passengers in the city during the anti-government movement in 2014.

Dhaka's Metropolitan Sessions Judge Md Kamrul Hossain Molla passed the order on Thursday after accepting a charge sheet against six other accused including Rabiul Islam and Jubair Hossain in the case.

The other discharged accused include BNP leaders Mirza Abbas, Goyeshwar Chandra Roy, Amanullah Aman, Barkatullah Bulu, Saiful Alam Nirob, Abdus Salam, Salauddin Ahamed, Obaidul Haque and Mohidul Islam Hiru; and Jamaat-e-Islami leaders Dr Shafiqul Islam Masud and Dr Shafiqur Rahman.

According to the case, on January 3, 2014, miscreants hurled bombs on a passenger bus at Paribagh intersection under Ramna police station during a hartal called by the BNP-led alliance. Passengers Shahina Aktar and Farid Miah died in the incident while driver Babul Miah sustained critical injuries.

Later Sub-Inspector Ashraful Islam of Ramna police filed the case against Fakhrul and others. DB Sub-Inspector Bahauddin Faruk, also the investigation officer, submitted the charge sheet on April 29 last year against six people and appealed to the court to discharge others.
