Two injured as police open fire on Jamaat rally

Update : 08 Mar 2016, 09:20 AM

Two supporters of Jamaat and Shibir have been injured when police opened fire on a procession at Moghbazar in the capital.

The Jamaat-Shibir men brought out the procession around 11am Tuesday, protesting the apex court verdict that upheld Jamaat leader Mir Quasem's death penalty for war crimes.

Ramna police station OC Mushfiqur Rahman said: "The Jamaat-Shibir men hurled brick chips and tried to vandalise police vehicle as the law enforcers barred their procession. Then the policemen fired four rounds of bullets for self defence.

"Two persons were held from the procession. They were admitted to Islami Bank Central Hospital and Dhaka Medical College Hospital with bullet wounds," the OC added.

Earlier in the day, the Supreme Court upheld the war tribunal’s death sentence awarded to Mir Quasem Ali for committing crimes against humanity during the 1971 Liberation War.

Protesting the verdict, Jamaat-e-Islami called a countrywide hartal for Wednesday.
